Electromagnetic area monitoring complying with ITU-T K.83

NardaNew on the market from Narda Safety Test Solutions is the AMB-8059, a wideband Area Monitor that monitors electromagnetic fields up to 7 GHz in conformance with the ITU-T Recommendation K.83. The data can be accessed via Ethernet or GSM/UMTS. The “EMF Observatory” software integrates several Area Monitors into a wide area coverage monitoring system.

The new type AMB-8059 Area Monitors monitor electromagnetic fields in accordance with the ITU-T Recommendation K.83: Monitoring of electromagnetic field levels. Depending on the probes used, they capture electric field strengths in the frequency range 100 kHz to 7 GHz. The lower frequency range from 10 Hz to 5 kHz is covered by probes for electric and magnetic fields.

The Area Monitor stores the measurement data internally. This can then be accessed locally using Ethernet, USB or RS232, or transferred to SD Card, or remotely by transmission via a mobile modem. If required, the monitor also transmits its position as GPS coordinates along with the measurement data. Each monitor is completely autonomous, thanks to power from solar cells, with a reserve of up to 80 days operation in darkness.

The monitors can be equipped with various probes. For example, Narda offers a quad-band electric field probe for monitoring public spaces and residential areas. This selectively measures three mobile phone bands and also the entire wideband range from 100 kHz to 7 GHz without resorting to deceptive computing such as additions or subtractions. The Area Monitor can be equipped with probes for the electric and the magnetic field for measurements in industrial environments where low frequency high currents flow, so both near field components are measured separately to comply with regulations. 2/2

A web based monitoring system that has wide area coverage and is time contiguous can be set up using the “EMF Observatory” software. This automatically collects the data from the Area Monitors, stores it on a server, generates reports and statistics, and reacts immediately to alarms such as when limit values are exceeded or to messages about the operating status of individual stations. The user interface is designed so that it can be operated almost without any prior training.
