700 MHz Band to Be Repurposed for Wireless Broadband

Wireless | In Compliance Magazine

A recent report published by Pascal Lamy, Chairman of the High Level Group on the future of the UHF spectrum, has recommended that the 700 MHz band be repurposed for wireless broadband use by 2020. The 700 MHz band is currently used by broadcasters. The report also asks for worldwide regulatory stability of the 470-694 MHz band for broadcasting until 2030.

The proposed recommendation will be reviewed at the 2015 World Radiocommunication Conference to allow any revisions to global spectrum rules to be made to prevent user interference in different countries. The proposed 2020 deadline has a two year window built in to account for the variety in broadcasting across the European Union, and to reduce costs to consumers and spectrum users.
