$55 Million Allocated for Projects to Improve Fuel Efficiency and Electric Vehicle Technology

Thirty-one projects have received a combined $55 million from the Obama administration to improve technology of electric vehicles (EV) and fuel efficiency of gasoline or diesel vehicles. According to Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz, “investments in the next generation of vehicle technologies will both strengthen our economy and lead to a more fuel efficient, clean energy future.”

The project aimed to improve electric vehicle technology, will be funded by the Department of Energy (DOE) and focus on developing battery technologies that do not rely on lithium ion. Other projects will aim to make components light and lessen drivetrain friction to reduce the price of plug-in electric vehicles. The non-EV projects will focus on developing dual-fuel technologies to decrease petroleum use, and improve fuel efficiency of gasoline or diesel vehicles.
