3D Scanning Advances Archeological Dig in Russia

The infamous Battle of Borodino, the largest and deadliest battle during the French Invasion into Russia is now the site of an archeological dig being conducted by the Russian Academy of Sciences. The excavation site is on the battlefield where over 70,000 casualties happened and was the last offensive action fought in Russia by Napoleon 1.

With new 3D handheld scanning techniques, photographs and handwritten notes are now being replaced with scans of objects that are being uncovered. The remains of 38 war-horses and 11 soldiers were discovered, scanned layer by layer and can be evaluated for further analysis after archeologists leave the site.  These tasks of documenting objects and subjects previously took days to complete, but the new scanning ability, they have been reduced to hours.
