U.S. Department of Energy Announces $7 Million in Funding for Community Microgrid Development

Seven million dollars has been set aside for funding by the United States Department of Energy to increase the design of microgrids to help communities be more prepared for power outages caused by severe weather and other events.

The funding will offer communities, technology developers and providers and utilities to develop advanced commercial-grade microgrid controllers and systems design to help develop a design and implementation plan. Applicants applying for funding will design a microgrid system up to 10MW, enough to power a small community. Interested parties need to submit applications before April 28, 2014 and six awards are expected to be given.
