12 Million More Vehicles Recalled for Defective Takata Air Bags

Earlier this month, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced it would be expanding and accelerating the recall of Takata air bag inflators. The inflators have been linked to ten deaths and more than 100 injuries in the United States, prompting the largest vehicle recall in American history. While 28.8 million inflators have already been recalled, an additional 35-40 million inflators will now be added to the recall in phases between now and December 2019, prioritized based on risk. The expanded recall is the result of an investigation that uncovered the root cause of Takata’s inflator ruptures. A press release from NHTSA explains:

A combination of time, environmental moisture and fluctuating high temperatures contribute to the degradation of the ammonium nitrate propellant in the inflators. Such degradation can cause the propellant to burn too quickly, rupturing the inflator module and sending shrapnel through the air bag and into the vehicle occupants.

The newest phase in the recall includes the following vehicles.
